Breathwork is, simply, the intentional manipulation of your breath. If you've ever meditated, you may have observed your breath as part of that. With breathwork, you're actively and consciously controlling how you breathe with the goal of creating a specific physical result.
Imagine being able to quickly change your physical, mental, and emotional state to how you want to feel, when you want to feel it. That's the power of breathwork. Need a burst of creativity for a business problem? Or maybe you're trying to "hurry up and relax" so you can get some quality rest? In either case — and so many other situations — learning to control your breath can help. It is the quickest, most sovereign way to take control of your nervous system.
No. In fact, every person who has ever learned breathwork started from zero. All you need is your breath! But certain breathing techniques aren't a good fit for everyone. If you have any medical conditions that concern you, talk to your doctor before starting a new program. Even with preexisting conditions, a breathwork coach can help you come up with a safe and effective program.
I often tell clients to try a technique for just 3 minutes and see how they feel afterward, because you can see the results of breathwork very quickly. Study after study has shown that just a few minutes of intentional breathing can reduce your heart rate and blood pressure. Having said that, when it comes to breathwork, more is more. It becomes more effective and more therapeutic the more often you do it. So while you can see results from just a little breathwork, to sustain the benefits, you'll want to make it part of your regular routine.
